Portrait of the Cavalier Dressed in a Blue Jacket
Gloria Golytsina inherited from the dwarf Agafon not only the cottage in the village of Cherny Log, but also the mysterious gift to see the core of matters, the past and the future.
Her “magical” assistance was sought by Polina Zhemchuzhnaya, a leading actress from the private theater. Gloria foresaw that the woman was in danger. Her premonition proved to be true – soon Polina died during the performance where she played the role of Cleopatra. Not long after that two more actresses from the same theater were found dead.
When Gloria tried to find out what happened, she discovered that the deaths were related to the fate of the count Sheremetev and his serf actress Praskovya Zhemchugova.
Who was disturbed by the shadow of the great count and his beloved one? How the portrait of the cavalier dressed in a blue jacked from Zubov’s gallery influenced the death of women who acted for Zubov in his own theater? Could the object of art dictate its will to its owner? The clue is close, but only those who can merge the past with the future, can find it.
This is the second book of the series about Gloria, and here we find Gloria in the new surroundings. She is a free woman (her husband died), she is rich and she discovered a new side in herself which was “sleeping” before and “woke up” after Agafon’s death. These are her magical gifts – knowledge of past and future, strange dreams and other abilities yet not fully known to Gloria.
In this book the reader is invited deep into Russia’s history. He or she will see the times of Ivan the Terrible, and will know the story of the Satin family who lived on the damned land. They disturbed it, and as the revenge of forgotten old gods, their family was almost destroyed. The few who survived devoted themselves to keeping of the family relics among which was the portrait which predicted death, and the mysterious ring which contained the key to all mysteries of the Universe.
Their descendant is the modern businessman and banker. He has a friend, another businessman, who is a theater sponsor and has the collection of Russian paintings. But one picture from his “gallery” remains hidden from visitors. This picture led its owner (or rather, keeper) to tragedy. Eager to avoid his own fate, he killed his lover not to be disappointed with her infidelity.
But what was the role of Gloria in these events? As you know, Agafon was the magician, and many people sought his advice and assistance. When Gloria decided to keep his house and live in it together with the faithful Santa, she inherited his “clients” too. And the first of them was the actress Polina Zhemchuzhnaya who was to die very soon on the stage, playing the role of Cleopatra…
This is a fresh, magical and mysterious book. It is very interesting to watch Gloria’s path to magic and power over people and herself.
